Sigma and Pi: Bonds and Electrons

What we learned:

  • All bonds between atoms are made of a pair of shared electrons
  • Bonds can be single, double, or triple
  • All bonds are made of 1 sigma bond, but there can never be more than 1 sigma bond
  • All additional bonds are pi bonds, made of pi electrons
    • Pi bonds exist in p-orbitals
    • Pi electrons are the electrons involved in resonance structures
