Hybridization: Counting Rule

What we learned:

  • The hybridization of any atom can be found through the use of the counting rule
  • The counting rule requires us to count all sigma bonds and only 1 lone pair*
    • *if the lone pair is on an atom bonded to another atom that is involved with a pi bond, we do not count the lone pair
      • This is referred to as the nitrogen exception and will be addressed in the next video
  • Instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4, we count in terms of hybridization
    • 1 = s
    • 2 = sp
    • 3 = sp2
    • 4 = sp3
